Apple’s frequent low-level changes for security and input in the last several macOS releases have left many devices on upgraded Macs abandoned until a new driver is released-or forever. I’ve found that nearly every trackball on the market or sophisticated-enough mouse requires USB Overdrive, unless the device maker’s driver is absolutely up to date. Just select macOS from Speed and Acceleration menus to reassert your previous choices, or adjust the app’s options to fit your needs. This took me aback on installing it recently, as USB Overdrive’s defaults were much more lively than mine.

I know preferences are different, but 30 cm or 12 inch just to move the mouse from the left to the right of an iMac 1680px screen is totally STUPID!! I know I can adjust the setting but (although I don't require a really fast setting) whatever you do it's NO WAY fast enough. And, I still need a football field to be able to click the user picture on the login screen where I CANNOT adjust the setting. My desk is not large enough to allow moving the mouse from the left to the right with OS X standard settings. So NO, this is NOT a question of getting used to it. So don't bother playing around with the settings but get USB Overdrive or Speedmouse (which I prefer) and consider this another Apple tax.

If it's getting too hard I use some tools to change modifier key etc. God, why do people in these threads still insist opinion is fact? But the mouse speed and acceleration range is just STUPID and USELESS (I didn't say that before, did I). In my empirical, not-backed-up-by-actual-knowledge-of-the-acceleration-curves experience, Windows has a flatter acceleration curve than the Mac. Every Windows computer I've ever used has had the sensitivity jacked through the roof, in order to provide quick long-distance movement at (IMHO) the expense of short-distance precision. My Mac-trained muscles overshoot everything on such a setup.
That's because, on a Mac, to move a long distance you move the mouse a lot faster than you would to move a short distance this doesn't work out so hot on Windows. I crank the sensitivity down on Windows to compensate for this, but it's never perfect. Of course, most Windows users I know who sit down in front of a Mac immediately jack the sensitivity way up in order to more closely approximate their accustomed long-distance mousing speed. This doesn't work out so hot either, because they then have no short-distance precision to speak of. There is no good solution to this but a willingness to practice and acclimatize. In my subjective opinion, the Mac curve provides a better balance between quick long-distance movement and short-distance precision than does the Windows curve.
